Zipline cofounder and CEO Melissa Wong wrote a new Forbes Business Council article on what retail leaders should look for before investing in AI.
According to an NVIDIA survey, 97% of retail organizations plan to increase AI spending over the next year. Melissa argues that most of the conversation is about what AI can do and how fast it works. She says the more important question is what data the AI is working from, and whether that data is accurate.
Most generic AI tools work alongside a retailer’s “organizational truth” (its locations, policies, training, and day-to-day operations) rather than from inside it. Without that context, AI doesn’t fix broken workflows. It scales them. As Melissa puts it,
“Speed is only an advantage when what’s moving through the system is accurate.”
What data is the AI-powered tool operating on?
That’s your first and most important question in order to establish whether the platform will speed up your operations or amplify errors.
The questions that follow pull on the same thread:
- Is the tool trained on your operations or on generic data?
- Does it understand your hierarchy, brand voice, and priorities?
- Can it connect store execution to business outcomes?
- Does it drive action in the flow of work?
- Does it get smarter over time by learning from your best stores?
